All State Junior High Choir — A Successful Event

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Corn, OKLA — On January 14-16, two Corn Bible Academy junior high students participated in the OCDA Junior High All State Mixed Choir that took place at the Cox Center in Oklahoma City.  This culminated a rigorous audition process during the past three months with 1820 students auditioning for the two choirs chosen from all over Oklahoma.

Braden Hartsell, an eighth grader from Weatherford, sang first tenor in the 200 voice choir.  Braden is the son of Brand and Tamara Hartsell of Weatherford.

Jasilin Hall, an eighth grader from Corn, sang second alto in the choir.  Jasilin is the daughter of Martin and Jill Hall of Corn.

The choir rehearsed for a total of 13 hours during the three day event under the direction of Steven Demorest, professor of Music Education at the University of Washington where he conducts the Men’s Glee Club along with teaching and music research responsibilities.  Professor Demorest is a very communicative director and had a unique way of connecting with the students.

One of the selections, “Return,” by Eric Barnum, was selected as a world premier especially written and commissioned for the 2010 OCDA all-state choral festival.  The concert took place at the First Nazarene Church in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Braden and Jasilin were accompanied by their choir director, Charles Regier, who directs the junior high and senior high vocal and instrumental music at Corn Bible Academy.  Mr. Regier is assisted by Todd Smith who also teaches science at the school.
