Corn, OKLA.–The athletic program at Corn Bible Academy continues to make strides in its volleyball and football programs this season. Under the leadership of Coach Terry Fellenstein and Coach Kenny Schimmer, the Crusaders are ready for football after playing hard in the opening scrimmage on Friday night, August 21, in Canton. The team participated in the scrimmage against three strong teams from western Oklahoma – Seiling, Canton, and Shattuck.
Coach Fellenstein was uneasy about his young team battling against the seasoned schools, but he came away with a very optimistic outlook for CBA and the season. “The boys played hard and faired well against the other teams. I was impressed with our younger players. They were apprehensive at first, but there is a lot of potential there.” Andrew Troyer, a ninth grade player who was hesitant about playing on the high school level, scored his first touchdown of the season in the last “game” of the night against Seiling. “Even though it was a scrimmage, the team showed the fans that they are ready for another great season,” commented Clare Goering, school superintendent.
The Crusaders participate in another pre-season scrimmage on Friday night, August 28, at Geary. The junior high team begins their season on Monday night, August 31, with their first game at Crusader Park against Merritt. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Lady Crusaders continue to improve on the court. On Monday, August 24, the ladies took on Fletcher at home and didn’t lose a game all night. Coach Cherilen Slagell is impressed with two junior high girls, in particular. Jasilin Hall and Emily Spalding, both eighth grade students, are standouts this week in the setter position. “The girls are playing well and showing a lot of improvement on the court.”
In the varsity match, CBA handily dismissed the Wildcats, 25-8, 25-9, 25-12 , improving their record this season to 8-1. The junior high and varsity teams travel to Snyder on Tuesday with matches set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
