CBA To OSU

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Corn, OKLA — The bags are packed. The truck is headed east. For the second year in a row the top CBA student is headed to Stillwater. Byron Detweiler, 2010 CBA valedictorian, has enrolled at Oklahoma State University as a pre-med student for the 2010 fall semester.

Blake Engelman, 2009 CBA valedictorian, also selected OSU a year ago to study mechanical engineering based on the availability of the degree program and recognition of academic excellence.

The two young men have more in common than earning valedictorian honors at CBA and the selection of OSU for their college education. Both students qualified for a scholarship as an Oklahoma Academic scholar.

This $5,500 annual scholarship is funded by the Oklahoma legislature and administered by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. To qualify for the scholarship the two students scored at or above the 99.5 % on the ACT exam. This translates to a score of 34 or better.

In addition both students received the distinguished Robert C. Byrd Scholarship which is designed to recognize exceptionally able high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. The program is federally funded and awards funds to state education agencies (SEAs), which make scholarship awards to eligible applicants. The average scholarship is $1,500 per year.

Students receive the scholarships for college expenses. Each of these two scholarships is renewable for four or five years if the required grade point average is maintained.

Ellie Troyer to Represent in Washington D.C.

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Corn, OKLA. — Touchstone Energy Partners, along with the Ki-Wash Electric Co-op, recently awarded Corn Bible Academy eleventh grade student Ellie Troyer with an all-expense paid summer trip to Washington D.C.  In order to receive the award, Ellie had to go through a rigorous process that included a written exam and an interview in front of the Ki-Wash Board and supporters.

Ellie, daughter of Don and Karla Troyer of Hydro,  first heard about the Washington D.C. opportunity from chapel speaker Lisa Willard, a spokesperson for the co-op. Encouraged by her history instructor, Kenny Schimmer, Ellie agreed to enter the contest and take the test. After completing the written exam at school which included multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and two essay questions about the history of small electric co-ops and the way in which they operate, Ellie waited on the outcome, but not expecting to go very far in the process. When the letter arrived announcing that she was one of four semi-finalists, she was thrilled but still not confident that she would be chosen as the recipient of the trip.

Ellie and her parents were invited last month to a special dinner in Cordell provided by Ki-Wash Electric, along with three other finalists. During the dinner, all four students were interviewed in front of their parents and the Board Members. By the end of the evening, Ellie was pronounced one of two local recipients of the June trip to Washington D.C. and will join other eleventh grade students from all across the nation who also won the award. Ellie is the second CBA student to win this award in the past four years.

“Mr. Schimmer told me that I had a good chance of winning this trip and I knew it would be a great opportunity to represent western Oklahoma. I am looking forward to the trip because I know I will benefit from the experience of visiting our nation’s capital with other high school juniors from all over the United States.”

Petra! Nineveh! Babylon!

Thursday, November 5th, 2009
The town of Corn and its elevator can be seen from a distance

The town of Corn and its elevator can be seen from a distance

Corn, OKLA. — Joyce Creed is the Christian Studies teacher at Corn Bible Academy and has been working on a project with the 7th and 8th grade students. The following is an overview of the class project in the words of Mrs. Creed.
The CBA junior high boys pose in front of the Corn elevator after completing their Christian Studies project
The CBA junior high boys pose in front of the Corn elevator after completing their Christian Studies project

While learning about Major and Minor Prophets in my Old Testament class, we kept hearing about three great cities–once terrible enough to melt the courage of a thousand little villages–now lying in the rubble of their own annihilation, brought to their knees and covered by desert sand–myths buried deep and doubted by all who questioned the writings of obscure Hebrew prophets.

Today, all three cities have been unearthed and rediscovered. So amazing are the ruins that we still stand in awe of them. Towers, moats–sixty feet deep, walls as thick as a city street, magnificent buildings carved into the sides of canyon walls. We’ve been researching–my students and I.

Since there are no skyscrapers out here in the country, we had to use the grain elevator for comparison. It works well actually. It’s as high as the palace section of Nineveh’s wall, as high as the cliff face of Petra, and not nearly as high as the walls of Babylon–and the walls of Babylon stretched for fourteen miles, all the way from our little town to the interstate, and beyond. When you look at it that way, it’s impressive! If you look closely, you can see the boys’ class clustered at the foot of the elevator.

The main part of this elevator is 120 feet tall. With the additional tower on top, it extends to 170 feet.

Some of the facades in Petra were 120 feet tall, and the cliffs around varied from 100 to 300 feet high.

The walls of Nineveh were 53 feet high for the most part, but one area by the palace was 148 feet high, and the walls were also 40-55 feet thick.

Babylon’s walls were higher than 170 feet tall–Herodotus said 350 feet tall–and the wall was a double wall that stretched for fourteen miles.

I took a picture on the way to school, approaching the elevator in the distance in order to imagine how one would feel traveling toward one of these great cities. We can see this one from our town, which is around 13 miles away. Just think what it would look like if it were 14 miles long!

Today we took a short field trip during class and walked to the elevator. While there, we recorded our City Chants, took a few pictures, and just stood and stared upward, thinking about those three colossal cities, and the walls that defended them so long.

Yet Petra fell…just like Obadiah predicted.

Nineveh fell…with a flood and an invasion, just like Nahum prophesied.

And Babylon was given to Cyrus the Persian and Darius the Mede…an “invulnerable golden kingdom”…invaded through the dry bed of a diverted river. Well, Isaiah did say it would happen.

Mighty kingdoms rise and fall, but the Word of the Lord endures forever.

Corn, OKLA. — Corn Bible Academy participated in the District Academic Tournament held at Arapaho on Monday, October 26, scoring an average of 170 points per game. The team defeated Canute and Washita Heights but lost to Arapaho to take 2nd place. CBA’s most valuable player was eleventh grade student Brian Koehn who garnered 140 points in the toss-up rounds.

These three students each added 40 points during the toss-up rounds with all four team members contributing points during the 60 second team rounds.  Kent McAbee, another ninth grade student, served as the time-keeper.

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

CORN, Okla.–While students and families spend the lazy days of summer enjoying the weather and vacation time, Corn Bible Academy Administration and staff are busy as they plan for the 2009-2010 school year.  Many hours go into preparing the school for students in August, and one of the first events of the new school year is Registration Day.

On July 21, from 2:00-8:00 p.m., all returning students and their parents are to register for school and bring financial and medical information to the office. Students need to attend with their parents in order to complete necessary forms.

July 25 is Work Day at CBA, and all students and parents are encouraged to attend in the morning, afternoon, or all day. There are many projects that will take place, and volunteers are needed to finish each one. Please call the school office to reserve your family’s place for lunch that day!

August 10 is a big night at CBA, kicking off the new school year with Buck-a-Burger Night in the cafeteria at 6:00 p.m.  Students may also take care of athletic physicals that evening at the school for $10. Following Buck-a-Burger Night is the Annual Meeting at 7:30 in the auditorium for all parents and friends of CBA. Immediately afterwards, coaches will have a short meeting with all football and volleyball parents.

August 12 is Enrollment Day. At 1:00 p.m., grades 10-12 will enroll, and at 2:00 p.m., grades 7-9 will enroll.  This is the day students will create their class schedule and receive locker and mailbox assignments for the year. The first day of school begins on Thursday, August 13 at 8:00 a.m.
