Using the SkyTrack

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Corn, OKLA — When organizations set goals to accomplish, the next step is for them to develop a plan to accomplish those goals. One of the goals for the Lady Crusader Volleyball team is to get to the state tournament. The plan they have to get there involves using a SkyTrack.

A SkyTrack is used to get things done up high where most people aren’t able to reach. The SkyTrack for the Lady Crusaders is also recognized by the names of 5’ 11” senior Emily Dick and 6’ junior Jessica Penner. Their height and leaping ability have caught the attention of opposing coaches and players and for good reason.

The two spiking specialists were recognized by being selected to the all tournament team at the Best of the West volleyball tournament held at Clinton, Oklahoma and have combined for an average of 13 kills per match so far during the 2010 season. With a record of 10 wins and 7 losses the Crusaders are focused on their goal of hosting a regional tournament and going to state. To accomplish that goal they plan on using their “SkyTrack”.

The End Of The Line

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Corn , OKLA — What does the phrase “The End Of The Line” mean? The phrase itself implies the meaning of no where to go or reaching a dead end.

On Friday nights for the opponents of the Crusader football team reaching the end of the line means a close up encounter with senior defensive ends Jared Boese and Ben Sawatzky. Boese, at 6’ 3″ 165 pounds, and Sawatzky, at 6’ 0” 181 pounds, have been given the job of sealing off the outside during the run situation and rushing the quarterback on passing downs.

In 2009, Boese was the team leader with 122 tackles and 7 sacks.  He was also a 1st team all district special teams player. Sawatzky averaged 8 tackles and 2 sacks per game at linebacker for the 2009 season including 8 tackles for a loss.

These two players have the combination of size, quickness and aggressiveness needed to control the outside running game. For the opponents of the Crusaders on Friday nights, it won’t take long until they reach “The End Of The Line”.

Football Season Begins September 3

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Corn, OKLA — Practice for the 2010 football season is underway under the leadership of head coach Terry Fellenstein and assistants Kenny Schimmer and Todd Smith. The 2009 season ended with an overall record of 5 wins and 5 losses and a district record of 4 wins and 4 losses.

With the return of several players lost to injuries last year the Crusaders are anticipating an improved season and a strong showing in the playoffs. The Crusaders return 11 starters from the 2009 season and have 9 seniors leading the way as they prepare  for the 2010 season.

According to Coach Fellenstein, strengths this year include 6 returning starters on both offense and defense and improved size and strength of the team as a whole. An important key to success as the season develops will be keeping injuries to a minimum.

Team leaders on offense and their positions are Pate Gossen at quarterback, Andrew Troyer at running back, Spencer Huiatt at end, and Jacob Friesen at guard. Team leaders on defense and their positions are Tyler Henry at linebacker, Jared Boese at defensive end, and Ben Sawatzky at defensive end. Crucial district matches include Thackerville on September 10, Tipton on October 15, Ryan on October 21, and Temple on October 29.

Wind Has No Effect on Lady Crusaders

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Corn, OKLA. — As the wind howled across the dirt playing field on Tuesday afternoon, the Lady Crusaders of Corn Bible Academy blew away the Mountain View/Gotebo Tigers in an afternoon double header at the Crusader Complex.

After a rough start to the season, the Crusader softball team is coming into their own, playing together, hitting well, and dominating other local teams midway through the schedule.  Most high school girls are consumed with finishing out the school year with thoughts of prom, ACT testing, and the hunt for summer jobs. But in many western Oklahoma rural schools, you can find a core group of girls who dedicate themselves to practices after school, ballgames that go into the evening hours, and weekend tournaments in a short five week season that plays havoc on end of school calendars already full with events.  Such is the case at CBA this year, with a small ten member team of girls who are not quite ready to give up athletics for the 2009-2010 school year.

Against the Tigers, Corn Bible Academy scored 14 runs in just three short innings to shut out Mountain View/Gotebo in the first game of the afternoon, and then finished off the day run-ruling the competition, 21-6.

Game #1 Leading Hitters:
Emily Dick, 2-3, 3 RBI
Ellie Troyer, 2-3, 2 RBI
Skyler Voss, 1-1, HR, 3 RBI

Game #2 Leading Hitters:
Ellie Troyer, 3-3, HR, 3 RBI
RaeLyn Epp, 2-3, 3 RBI

Friday’s 16-14 win over Hinton came on a six run rally in the 5th inning, moving CBA into the championship round. A 14-4 loss to Binger-Oney and an 8-5 loss to Apache put the team in 3rd place.
