Corn, OK — The Worst High School Play in the World begins in the year 1243 A.D. in the land of Saxonia where all is not well. Darkness and discontent hang thick in the air like sausages in a smokehouse. The reasonably handsome King Isadore is off to the Crusades to smite heathens and purchase porcelain. In his place, his creep brother Prince Viscera (Dylan Schmidt) brings sorrow and fear to every hearth and leaves them sitting on the front porch, like two quarts of spoiled milk. There is also joy in Saxonia, for Isadore has not only left town but he has also left a son. The boy’s name is Ivanha (Carter Smith) and this is his story told by Friar Rico (Dakota Brewer) and a little girl named Belinda (Audrey Spalding). Evil Prince Viscera and his minions—Medulla, the flaky court physician (Amy Freeman) and Shecky, the court jester (Spencer Boese)—work to make sure Ivanha will not become the next king of Saxonia. To protect her son, Queen Nina (Morgan Potter) takes her children—Ivanha and Corsicana (Cassidy Listak)—to the forest to escape Viscera’s evil plan. With no other choice, she abandons the prince in the forest while she and Corsicana split up to foil the Prince’s hounds, er—cats. Left in the forest alone the infant Ivanha is found by a mother squirrel (Anastasia Martinez), who calls all the squirrels of the forest together to pledge to care for this child and raise him as a son. With the love of the squirrels, including Papa squirrel (Justin Sawatzky) and Trudy squirrel (Laura Marrufo), he not only survives but thrives. As a full-grown squirrel, er—man, he is found one day by the neighboring Friar Fred (James Vercellotti) who ushers Ivanha back to the abbey and introduces him into the world of men. Ivanha learns to speak, to read and write, and to reason; and of course, he learns of love when the Lady Lenore of the House of Usher (Allison Russell) stays over at the abbey on her way to meet her betrothed, the Evil Price Viscera, at the 756th Annual Royal Field Joust between the defending champion, Rashad Alamein (David Gwartney) and Felippe LeBlanc (Dakota Clayton).
It is a story of love and revenge. More than that, it is the worst plot you’ve ever seen on a stage!
