Being a New Student

CORN, Okla.–Being a new student is sometimes scary. Sometimes you don’t know anyone or you at least know one person. Meeting new people can be scary too, because they could be really rude. Not at Corn Bible Academy. At CBA, we try to make everyone feel welcome. If you’re going to be a new student at CBA, be prepared for questions like these.
1. Hey, how are you?
2. Where are you from?
3. Are you an OSU or an OU fan?
4. What do you think of the food?
5. What is your name?
6. Do you play sports?

You may not get asked these on the first day, but eventually you will. I remember my first day at CBA: I was very nervous, but because the kids here were so kind to me, I loved it right away. This got me thinking, “I wonder what other people thought about their first day?” So I decided to interview people who have attended CBA in the past and the present.

First up is Susan Shantz, my mother, who graduated from CBA in 1985. When asked, “What do you remember about your first day at CBA?”

She replied with a laugh, and I quote, “Nothing, I am too old to remember.”

I also asked, “What do you remember about the food on the first day of school?

She answered with “THE FOOD!!! Not as good as what you all have today.”

“What name did you go by at CBA?”

“Susan” she replied.

Second, I asked Emily Bartel. Emily is a junior and she is a classmate. I asked Emily the following questions. “What school did you go to before coming to CBA?”

“Weatherford Public Schools,” she replied.

“Are you an OSU or an OU fan?” I asked.

“OSU fan,” she said.

“How was your first day of school?”

She answered, “ It was scary and a little exciting, but then also proud because my brother, sister and I were the 4th generation to come to this school and hoped to keep carrying on the tradition in the family.”

Emily’s brother graduated in 2007, and her younger sister is currently attending CBA as a freshman.

Finally, I asked Regal Shantz some questions about CBA. He is my younger brother and a seventh grader at CBA, so this is his first year here. I asked Regal more questions since he is a newbie this year. I asked Regal “How do you feel about CBA?”

He responded with “How do I feel about it? What kind of question is that? I LOVE it.”

I asked him why he loved it, and he said, “Because it’s better than my old school.”

“How is it better than your old school?” I asked.

“My old school was not a Christian school, the food was not NEARLY as good, and I am learning more here.”

I was intrigued with Regal so I asked him more. “Do you play sports?”

“Yes, basketball and football,” he said.

“Do people call you anything other than Regal?” I asked.

“Regis.” He replied with a smile.

When asked, “Who do you look up to?”, he answered, “My wonderful big sister,” with a choking sound at the end.

Not everyone enjoys their first day of school, possibly because they get swirlies or wedgies, or they have to give up their milk money to a bully. However, students who come to CBA will not have this done to them, because we don’t have to pay for our milk at lunch time. On the subject of swirlies and wedgies…I wouldn’t suggest going to the bathroom for the first month of school.
