CORN, Okla.–Corn Bible Academy is making a drastic change in the life of the school for the 2009-2010 school year to accommodate a new student who lives with severe allergies.
Beginning in August 2009, the school will be a nut-free campus and will no longer allow any type of nut or nut products to be used in school meals, concession stands, or in any foods that are brought into the school building.
The Administration asks that students also refrain from eating all nut products (including peanut butter) for breakfast on school mornings, as the residue from nuts stays on the breath for several hours and can affect the health of the student.
According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, peanut allergy is the most prevalent food allergy in the United States, where as many as 1.5 million people suffer from the disease, and it is the most common cause of food related death, with approximately 100 people in the United States alone dying every year from an adverse peanut allergy reaction.
Peanut Allergy is responsible for 15,000 emergency room visits every year, and CBA wants to do everything it can to assist our new student and his family in securing a safe learning environment. Please be vigilant in choosing food items to bring in your backpacks, sack lunches, etc. Look at the labels on snack foods and watch for any byproducts that are made with peanut oils and any snack items made in facilities that manufacture peanut products.
By starting the awareness early, the school and its students and families will be able to plan and prepare for the new school year and welcome everyone to a nut-free facility in the fall.
