Cell Phones or No Cell Phones?

The following article was written by Rachel Detweiler, a ninth grade student at Corn Bible Academy.

Corn, OKLA.—Cell phones in the classroom?  This is the question that every school is asking.  According to schoolsecurity.org, most schools do not allow cell phones because of disruptions in class. However, this website notes that some people think cell phones could be a safety feature in a crisis. Schools considered these issues as they made decisions for this school year.

Nearly all schools in the United States banned cell phones last year, and it looks as though it will be the same this year.* Although cell phones have been used to alert students of potential dangers, most school officials think that the problems related to cell phones outweigh the benefits. In class, these devices can distract their owners. Cell phones can also be used to cheat on assignments. These were two of the issues school officials considered as they made decisions this year.

The question about cell phones remains. It is an issue that will be considered in the coming years as more safety measures are needed and technology advancements are made. For now, most schools are keeping cell phones out of the classroom.

* Corn Bible Academy’s cell phone policy states that “cell phones may be brought to school but must be left in the student’s locker or vehicle. Cell phones that are brought to class will be confiscated and turned in to the office.

First offense: Student may get the phone back at the end of the day
Second offense: Parent must pick up the phone
Subsequent offenses: Parent must pick up the phone and pay substantial fines
